Sea Squirts

Thursday morning program for toddlers ages 18 months to 3 years. This theme-based program is designed to encourage moms or dadts and tots to explore the world around them. This weekly drop-in program is free. FOR MUSEUM MEMBERS ONLY.

Little Minnows

Morning program for pre-schoolers 3-5. Activities are age appropriate. Sessions meet in the museum’s classroom from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Fees are $4 for members and $5 for non-members until October 31. Fees will increase to $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers for November and beyond programs. Pre-registration encouraged. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Young Salts

Saturday morning program for children ages 5-7. Each session involves active learning about one of the museum themes. Sessions meet in the museum from 10 a.m. to noon. Fees are $10 for members and $12 for nonmembers. Preregistration required. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41.

Build A Canoe

Have you ever wanted to build your own canoe? Calvert Marine Museum is now offering the chance to build a 16-foot wooden canoe to fit your schedule. With the “Build a Canoe by Appointment” program, you provide us with two consecutive Saturdays and we will put you on the calendar. Find out more about building you own canoe HERE.
 


Overnight Adventures At the Calvert Marine Museum and Cove Point Lighthouse

Want to experience the Calvert Marine Museum is a whole new way? Try our overnight programs. Designed for groups with a minimum 10 people to maximum of 20 people, overnights offer an in-depth museum experience mixed with behind-the-scenes fun. It’s also a good way for scouts to earn “Try-Its” and badges. Our overnights take place in two locations: the Exhibition Building at the museum or the Cove Point Lighthouse.

Fees for Overnights
Overnight programs are available over Saturday nights only. The cost is $25 per person, and includes admission to the museum, an interpreter lead program and activity, a pizza dinner and a continental breakfast. A non-refundable $25 registration fee is required with your registration form. Payment is due in two installments: 50% one month prior to your visit and the balance one week prior. From May through October, you have the option of participating in a one-hour boat trip on the Wm. B. Tennison, on Saturday afternoon for an additional charge of $7 adult, $4 for children 12 & under.

Overnights at Cove Point Lighthouse
The Cove Point Lighthouse, built in 1828, is Maryland’s oldest continuously operating lighthouse. In 2000, the U.S. Coast Guard turned the lighthouse over to the museum. Overnights can take place from April through November. You may either camp outside on the grounds or sleep inside the keeper’s house. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are available.

Programs at the Lighthouse
An interpreter will lead a tour of the lighthouse facilities. There are two lighthouse program choices, one for children over 12 and adults and a second designed for children 7 - 12. Participants will be given a museum pass be used either on Saturday prior to coming to the lighthouse or on Sunday following your overnight experience.

    After spending the afternoon touring the museum’s various exhibits, visitors will have a pizza dinner, then spend the night in the Discovery Room and Mezzanine areas of the museum. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are available. A large screen TV may be used for movies.

    An interpreter will lead the group on a tour of the museum, followed by a crafts activity.

    First, call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 to reserve your date. Then send in the reservation form and non-refundable $25 fee to hold your reservation. Our Group Services Coordinator will work with you to ensure your overnight experience at the Calvert Marine Museum is exactly what you are looking for.

    Birthday Parties at the Calvert Marine Museum For Members Only!
    Come have your birthday party with us! Our birthdays accommodate a maximum of 15 children and 5 adults. The fee includes:
  • Admission to the museum
  • Your choice of birthday theme
  • A goodie bag from the store for each child
  • Reserved space for your party
  • Museum T-shirt for the birthday girl or boy

  • CMM Birthday Parties are two hours. Every party includes a theme related craft or activity, game, song, and story or puppet play. The last 45 minutes we reserve the party room for you to have food, cake, ice cream and presents. You are responsible for bringing all party supplies and refreshments and for clean up.

    Party Themes & Recommended Ages:

  • Diggin’ Up The Past Age 5 & up
  • Mermaid Tea Party Age 5 - 8
  • Pirate Adventures Age 5 – 8
  • Fins & Tails Age 3 – 6
  • Outrageous Otters Age 3 & up We also offer a special birthday Cruising Aboard the Wm. B. Tennison. This party can accommodate up to 38 people, and is great for any age. You can take an hour long ride, and have your cake and gifts on board. Fee includes admission to the museum for all participants.

    Fees: Basic birthday party: $125
    Tennison Cruise (1 hour) $250

    Fossil Field Experience
    A Saturday program for persons 8 years and older who like to learn while having fun.  Only $20.00 per person!
      You must preregister in 2 business days before the program.

    Time: 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.                                                                              
    Cost: $20/person                                                                                             
    (an adult must accompany any children and please,
    no children under 8)

    Calvert Cliffs

    The group will assemble at the museum and the program will begin at 11 a.m.  If you wish, you may arrive early (after 10 a.m.) and visit the museum's other exhibits before the program begins.

    Between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., participants will utilize the paleontology hall and teaching collections to learn about the ancient Miocene sea, the formation of Calvert Cliffs, and the paleontological techniques used to uncover the evidence of life in the region which existed some 10 to 20 million years ago.

    Bring a picnic lunch to eat in the museum's picnic area (or dine off-site) from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.  If you have a few extra minutes, you may wish to visit the museum's Discovery Room or the Gift Shop before journeying to Cove Point Lighthouse at 1:30 p.m. (we will travel caravan-style in our individual cars).

    From 2 to 4 p.m., members of the group will have a chance to put their knowledge and skills to work when they comb the beach at Cove Point Lighthouse in search of their own fossils.  A museum interpreter will accompany your group and be available to discuss your discoveries with you and answer any questions you may have.

    Wear appropriate clothing for beach combing, and bring a change of dry clothes if desired.

    Special Note: While children (8 or older) can attend, they must be accompanied by a paying adult. There is a classroom lecture on the geology of the Bay and the Miocene epoch, which is not geared towards children. Please be sure of your child's interest in fossils before registering him or her.

    You will be notified by telephone or mail and a refund will be given if the program is canceled by the museum, or the program is filled by the time your registration is received, otherwise no refunds are allowed.
